Basic Poker Types

There are two basic types of poker: draw poker and stud poker. Each of the poker types includes large number of different poker variations. The most popular draw poker types are Texas Holdem and Omaha poker. If you want to play stud poker, you will usually find 5 card stud poker or 7 card stud poker, known also as Caribbean stud poker. Here you can read about the basic poker types including the game rules and how they can be played.

In all of the draw poker types of games the players start the game with a full hand and during the game they discard some of the cards and replace them with new one. The cards are usually dealt when they are faced down. The betting round starts after the players drew new cards.

In the stud poker types, the players are dealt a set number of cards at the beginning of the game and added more cards after each round of betting. There other stud poker variations where the players are dealt all the cards at the beginning of the game and reveal cards at a certain order during the next rounds of betting. Usually some of the initial cards are faced down while other are faced up. The additional cards are usually dealt faced up.

Both of the basic poker types can involve either five cards or seven cards. Three card stud poker is also a common version of stud poker games. The poker types of games can be played both high and high/low. When a high poker game is played, it means that the player with the highest hand wins the entire pot. If it is a high/low game, the players with the highest and the lowest hands have to share the pot.
